On 18 October 2026, Jajja Library welcomed around 30 students for our monthly teaching camp. Children aged 5 to 15, from different school grades, came together for a day of learning.
The camp covered Maths, Computer Science, English, Science, Urdu, Islamiat and Social Studies. Our volunteer-led teaching camps offer children from our village and beyond additional support with their studies, alongside access to the library’s books.
Beyond memorising answers
Working with these children highlights a gap between memorising a lesson and understanding it. In my experience, the emphasis in their schooling often seems to be on recalling formulas and answers rather than exploring the concepts behind them.
While teaching maths at this camp, I met a child who knew the formula for the area of a circle but did not know what pi meant. That moment stayed with me: being able to repeat a formula is not the same as understanding what it describes or why it works.
This interaction reinforced why our camps matter: children need room to ask questions and make sense of what they are learning, not simply memorise it.
These sessions are an important part of Jajja Library’s work. Since starting in 2020, our aim has been to make books and learning opportunities more accessible to our community.

An enthusiasm for books
One of the joys of running the library is seeing how enthusiastically the children borrow books. Their eagerness is a reminder that the desire to read and learn is already there. Alongside our teaching camps, the library gives them access to books they can take home and explore in their own time.
